Soccer Dogs in Mexico’s Championship Finals

It’s all about soccer in the Geo Quiz Thursday.

Mexico’s top two professional teams are ready for their showdown.

They play each other Thursday and Sunday, in a two-game series, to decide which team will be the national champion.

One of the teams is from Toluca in central Mexico – the other is from the border city we want you to name.

The answer is the Mexican border city of Tijuana which is in the grip of Xolos fever right now.

Xolos are a canine breed that we Americans know as Mexican hairless dogs. But Xolos is also the nickname of Tijuana’s professional soccer team which is battling for the crown of Mexican champion this week.

The World’s William Troop tells anchor Lisa Mullins about the team, and its passionate fans.

    San Diego doesn’t have an MLS team, true. But the city does have two pro teams in a lower league, the NPSL.

    Futbol es el deporte que esta jugado por todo el mundo.  Muchos paises sobre el mundo, especialmente los en Europa, Sudoamerica, y Mexico aman al futbol.  Esta todo su vida porque van a los juegos, miran los juegos por el televisor todo el ano, y juegan al futbol con sus amigos.  Para muchos lugares en Mexico, como Tijuana, esta una buena manera a unir y divertirles, especialmente durante los tiempos malas a causa de la violencia.  Es obvio que estes juegos estan muy importante para los Mexicanos, y pienso que va a ser un fin de semana muy importante, aunque no se que va a pasar si los dos equipos ganan un juego cada.

    As a football fan, I’d love to see Xolos play. I enjoy going to New England Revolution games but I constantly find myself being the only one in my section really cheering. If only that kind of enthusiasm would spread here to the states. Football is a great excuse to go and party in Tijuana though.

    Es muy emocionada por la gente del Mexico.  Futbol is un deporte muy populare en Mexico. Cuando dos equipos jugan, toda la gente vera para el equipos que gana.  Muchos chicos mexicanos jugan futbol por que es una parte de su cultura.  Futbol es una pasatiempo nacional del muchos paises hispanicos.  Hay voy a ser muchas personas emocionadas.

    It’s really too bad that America has never had the same enthusiasm for soccer/football like in South America and Europe. Soccer seems to be the source of a lot of nationalism and comradeship that the States seem to be lacking more recently.

    Yo soy muy celoso de los jugadores de fútbol de México.  En los Estados Unidos es diferente para los jugadores de fútbol.  Para mí, mis amigos no les gusta el fútbol, no ver partidos de fútbol, y ellos no les importa por el fútbol.  Es triste para mí.  En México, los jugadores de fútbol de llegar a la dedicación de su audiencia.  Ojalá que era como que en Estados Unidos.

    Es muy interesante que todo el mundo en México les gustan fútbol.  El país tiene un amor especial para ese deporte, y me gustaría.  Los Estados Unidos no tiene un solo deporte que todo el país juegan o le gustan.  Fútbol es muy importante en México para su cultura también.

    I think it’s great that theswe teams are getting this exposure. I like the pride that Mexico has to show for these teams and it’s nice to here about how into soccer  that this country gets, just like the rest of the world. I’m surprised that we aren’t as into soccer as the rest of the world is.

    Futbol de otros paises es muy intenso y los admiradores son muy apasionado.  A veces hace un ambiente mal con mucho tension. Pero, siempre di que deportes son un solo cosa que pueden cambiar y unir todo el mundo.  Nada puede traer muchas personas juntos como un juego de futbol o futbol americano.  Tiujana es un ejemplo bien de un deporte que esta cambiando el mundo.

    Creo que el fútbol es un gran deporte. Es conocido en todo el mundo. América fue el último país en jugar el deporte. Me alegro de que tanta gente en Tijuana están contentos porque el equipo. La ciudad está haciendo muy mejor porque el equipo es bien. Estoy animando por Tijuana.
