Philip Pullman might be the first to tell you that the best children’s stories aren’t always just for children. The British author, who is best known in the United States for the His Dark Materials trilogy, has now decided to tackle Grimm’s fairy tales. Pullman has selected 50 of the often strange, scary and downright morbid tales that the Brothers Grimm first published 200 years ago.

We also offer up this audio excerpt, which didn’t make it on air. Our anchor Marco Werman asked Philip Pullman if he could come up with a fairy tale that worked as a parable for a current news story.

    I heard Mr. Pullman’s interview and was fascinated. Fairy tales like the ones written by the brothers Grimm, bring back powerful lessons and memories even now, and I’m 54.
    Hopefully children will continue to enjoy them for another 200 years, with and without the salacious details.
