Extremism Law Curbs Religious Freedom in Russia

This is what extremism sounds like, according to Russian law. At the Kingdom Hall of the Jehovah’s Witnesses in St. Petersburg, worshippers start their bible study session with a song. No other religious group has been hit so hard by Russia’s controversial anti-extremism law. In the past three years, the church reports that state authorities have arrested or detained more than a thousand believers, searched 148 homes and buildings, and banned 68 publications.

“There is no logic, there is no any sense when experts say that this is extremism and this is not,” says Yaroslav Sivulski, a member of the church’s presiding committee.

“We are very active,” Sivulski says. “We are preaching, we approach people at home, we are preaching on the street, we are visible. Maybe it’s [that] our activities could be viewed like a threat to [the] Orthodox Church.”

The church had 40,000 members when the Soviet Union collapsed in 1991. They now have 165,000. Church leaders say they’re being persecuted as extremists, when all they’re doing is peacefully following their religion.

“The anti-extremist law in Russia is very problematic precisely because it is so broad and vague,” says Tanya Lokshina of Human Rights Watch. Human rights groups like hers have condemned the law on many fronts.

“It is essentially designed for selective use and sometimes it is being arbitrarily used, including against religious minorities,” says Lokshina.

Lokshina says the law has been used to go after “sects.” She notes that writings by L. Ron Hubbard made it onto the Federal List of Extremist Materials. The list has more than 1500 titles, half of which are religious. Geraldine Fagan is a religion analyst from the Forum 18 news service.

“There was an attempt recently to ban the Hare Krishna’s most revered text which didn’t work, partly because there was such an outcry in India,” Fagan says.

Fagan says that every extremism case she’s looked at has centered on charges that one religion has said that it’s better than others. She says the strategy is identical to how authorities treated any kind of dissent during the Soviet era.

“And there’s in fact an uncanny parallel between cases against Jehovah’s Witnesses now and the types of things which were happening in Soviet times in the 60s, 70s and 80s, right down to the use of the world ‘extremism,” Fagan says.

The extremism law is used against groups directly connected to violence, such as militant Islamic groups in the north Caucasus and neo-nazis. Its prosecution of religious minorities raises a lot of concerns. The Russian Orthodox Church denies that state authorities are acting on its behalf by cracking down on the competition, but Church spokesman Vsevolod Chaplin says that Jehovah’s Witnesses should be prevented from using inflammatory language, like calling the Russian Orthodox Church a false church.

“Some of the texts which they disseminate hurt the Orthodox Christians,” Chaplin says. “Sometimes they use toward us very impolite phrases which I can easily call extremist.”

The US Council on International Religious Freedom says the situation in Russia is “deteriorating” as the government increasingly uses the extremism law against peaceful religious groups and individuals. Five years ago, the law dropped the requirement for the use or threat of violence. And starting next year, participating in a “banned group” will be punishable by three years in prison.

    Persecution cuts both ways

Two wrongs dont make a right, oppression by the Russian government and oppression by Orwellian cults like Jehovah’s Witnesses are both bad.

The leadership of Jehovahs witnesses has a history of manipulating their own people to pursue the ends of their corporations above the well-being of individuals. They preach political neutrality, but make exceptions where it suits them, rather like the old sale of indulgences

. A look at the history of their dealings with their members in Malawi in comparison with their members in Mexico is well documented on the Internet. They are not truly politically neutral and put themselves in the place of highest authority over their members. Interesting that the JW usually find that they are ‘persecuted’ in societies that are more authoritarian than their own.
JWs insist on their freedom of speech rights but don’t allow rights for others, their intolerant.

      Continued….

JW’s have become a religion known better for what they don’t do, like not celebrating holidays, not taking blood transfusions, or not saluting the flag. They also claim to be persecuted by the nations, yet they claim ‘charity status’ and live tax free in most Western countries.
The origin of all Watchtower teachings that makes them unique over all other religions is their creed of Jesus second coming ‘invisibly’ in the year 1914.

When the time comes – you will regret being so negative. Deuteronomy 56:10 He will not hesitate toward the one who hates him; he will repay him to his face.

Sounds like *Angel* is making a criminal threat.Who is it that is going to ‘repay me to my face’?
          Are you a Jehovah’s Witness?

Angel, Don’t worry about Mr Haszard, his name tells it all.
He Trolls the internet spreading his lies and half truth everywhere.

He was disfellowshipped years ago and has an axe to grind.
It was on some blogs a couple years ago he sprayed some JW’s with Mace when they called on his door. Showing his true self.
(The blog said he was criminally charged,or sued, but who knows)

I do find it rather funny that he says “Tell the truth” when the truth does not appear to be anywhere in him.

What a terrible life it must be.
We know the Truth and honest hearted people can see that for themselves.

Jehovah’s Witnesses hit with $28 million sex abuse settlement Oakland,Calif.-Google it.

Jehovah’s Witnesses have many issues with sexual molestation of children. The religion and its members are more concerned about protecting the group image than the victims.

TWO WITNESSES required. The Jehovah’s Witnesses require ‘two witnesses’ to a crime or it didn’t happen, you are supposed to ‘leave it inJehovah’s hands’ wait on the lord.
How many pedophiles allow an eyewitness? These people engage in a door to door ministry, possibly exposing children to pedophiles. The Watchtower corporation has paid out millions in settlement money already. –Danny Haszard *tell the truth don’t be afraid*

So how do you feel that many faithful Jehovah’s Witnesses, including
children, have died from your ever changing policies on blood transfusions? What
about the ones who have died before blood fractions were allowed? How could Jehovah
or Jesus Christ be directing an organisation that has such a candid and
reckless approach to the sanctity of human life by allowing people to die for
the sake of a policy that has been changed countless times?

This is an inconsistent stance, as can be understood by contemplating
            the following questions.

            1. If it is wrong for a Witness
to donate blood, who do the blood fractions they use come from?

            2. If blood must be poured on the
ground, where are the blood fractions they use derived from?

            3. If abstaining from blood does not
allow taking a “major” fraction, why does it allow a fraction of a
            fraction?

            4. If blood fractions were always
acceptable to Jehovah, who is responsible for the Witnesses that needlessly
died refusing them, due to previous Watchtower policy?

Does this stance on blood show respect for life? Compare them with
            what God wants.

            Matthew 12:7 states: “However,
if YOU had understood what this means, ‘I want mercy, and not sacrifice,’ YOU
would not have condemned the guiltless ones.”

Dear Mr. Haszard: Gehenna just called. He says you have an appointment with him at  Armageddon.

While I believe in freedom of speech and religion, this matter goes beyond “beliefs”.  Witnesses are prohibited from questioning their OWN leaders, and they are considered outcasts and persecuted by their own families if they openly question the beliefs of the “Governing Body” in New York. Countless thousands have died because they are not allowed to have blood transfusions alone. All due to the decisions of Gene Smalley and Fred Rusk at their headquarters, who make up these doctrines… and they change every year.

      Jehovah’s Witnesses *blood transfusion confusion*.
In 2012 God’s will and scripture has little to do with the Jehovah’s Witnesses position on use of blood products.
The JW leadership is foremost concerned what will play out in a secular court of law as to the parent Watchtower being held liable for wrongful  deaths.
Most Jehovah’s Witnesses rushed to the ER with massive blood loss will cry NO BLOOD right up to their last breath,The shocker is they can now have most of the blood components that will pull them through, but they are so indoctrinated that blood is forbidden that they can’t comprehend the loopholes.
The Watchtower has drilled and grilled us that our stand on blood is NON NEGOTIABLE. The loopholes that allow blood usage is to save the Watchtower corporation money from blood death liability suits.
This is a truly evil organization that would sacrifice tens of thousands of men, women, children for the almighty dollar.
The blood products ban has been in force since 1945 the buzz today about it being a *personal conscience matter* and the hope of new medical advances like artificial blood don’t undo all those who have past perished.
The New York city based Watchtower sect is concerned foremost with liability lawsuits for wrongful death. They know that if they repeal the ban on *whole* blood transfusion, that it will open the door for legal examination of all the thousands who have died since 1945.
Cults do get people killed! 50-100 times as many men, women, children have been killed by the Watchtower society ban on *whole* blood transfusions than at Jonestown kool-aid mass murders. *tell the truth don’t be afraid* –Danny Haszard

Jehovah’s Witnesses are not like faiths that have “Leaders” We only view Jehovah God as our leader and his son Jesus Christ. You are mislead – doctrins do not change every year and have you ever done research to know WHY JW’s do not take blood? Look at the response to this Haszard guy given below

Actuaull we are told constantly to question what we are taught is from the Bible, that is why we always have our Bible at the meetings and encouraged to look up the scriptures.
If you do not agree with them then why would you want to be part of any religion you disagree with?

    • bob250

Jehovah’s Witnesses DO NOT believe in religious freedom.

If a member a so-called “publisher” discovers falsehoods in the Watchtower teachings and then decides to join another church, he/she will be severely shunned by friends and family in the JW religion.

Yes, the Watchtower will sugar-coat this and say that everyone is free to leave at will, but that just IS NOT the case because of the fear of being disfellowshipped.

So the Jehovah’s Witnesses are quick to become litigious whenever their “religious freedon” is infringed upon, yet they don’t extend that same freedom to their own members… highly hypocritical.

      • yamdigger

“Jehovah’s Witnesses DO NOT believe in religious freedom.”

Really? If I want to leave the congregation and go to some Babylonish church / mosque / synagogue / temple or nowhere at all, no is going to stop me. I’m still there because I WANT to be there. If you don’t agree with an organizations teachings, then get up a leave…and don’t let the door hit you on the way out.

      Jehovah’s Witnesses conscientious objector flip-flop.
Christians who object to military service as conscientious objectors are offered the option of National Alternative Service to work in various fields such as forestry, parks, hospitals etc.
Young men were at liberty to choose, but the choice of Alternative Service for Jehovah Witness men, carried with it the automatic disqualification to be viewed a JW in good standing, (disfellowshipped) subject to rejection and shunning by the Witness community, family and friends, with no hope of a resurrection.
Consequently, the refusal of young JW men to accept Alternative Service resulted in an automatic prison term of several years in penal institutions. This resulted in leaving jobs and, if married, leaving unsupported family and children, being separated for years.
Then in May 1996, WT reversed its policy leaving the decision up to the individual’s conscience (as it should be), no longer resulting in an automatic disassociation (disfellowshipped). These questions beg an answer: why was this policy maintained for decades resulting in needless imprisonment?
Alternative Service, a disfellowshipping sin for decades prior to May 1996, was no longer a crime against God after that date? After men had languished in prisons for years.

The taking in of blood from any source is unhealthy. Many people today do not want a blood transfusion because of the side effects and even death that sometimes coincide with the taking of blood. Jehovah God knew this when he said at Deuteronomy 25:23 that the “blood is the soul”. This is sacred to The True God - the no blood issue has nothing to do with what any man says we should or should not do. Jehovah’s Witnesses do not accept types of treatment that conflict with Bible principles. For example, they do not accept blood transfusions because the Bible forbids the taking of blood to sustain the body. (Genesis 9:4; Leviticus 17:1-14; Acts 15:28, 29)
Over the years Jehovah’s Witnesses and Doctors have worked together and learned that medical research proves alternatives to blood are effective. Therefore accepting these alternatives. So the biggest reason blood is not accepted is out of respect for our Heavenly Fathers direction and that the soul is sacred to him. Your feelings that it saves money from having lawsuits arise is ill founded.

      Transfusion confusion.
Jehovah’s Witnesses doctrine allows a liver transplant but not the blood that is in it.
Jehovahs Witnesses DO take blood products now in 2012.
They take all fractions of blood. This includes hemoglobin, albumin, clotting factors, cryosupernatant and cryo-poor too, and many, many, others.
If one adds up all the blood fractions the JWs takes, it equals a whole unit of blood. Any, many of these fractions are made from thousands upon thousands of units of donated blood.
Jehovah’s Witnesses now accept every fraction of blood except the membrane of the red blood cell. JWs now accept blood transfusions.
The fact that the JW blood issue is so unclear is downright dangerous in the emergency room.
More than 50,000 Jehovah’s Witnesses dead from Watchtowers deadly arbitrary blood ban, some estimates run as high as 100,000 dead

Danny – Danny – Danny WOW do you ever have an ax to grind. How long have you been harboring this hate????? Are you mad because “your” ideas or “insights” were not taken to point???? It sounds/reads that you live to hate, how miserable & misunderstood you must feel. have you tried seeing a specialist???? There are anger management classes that really work. Do you even – read – the Bible any more??or is it something you just quote from to try & prove a point?? Do even pray to — not just God, but use His name ( yours is Danny) JEHOVAH ?? Does that name make your skin crawl? If you have turned your back on Him & want nothing further to do with Jehovah, then your skin is acting appropriately………. I have never under stood why the love one once had for their Creator can turn into a hatred that is twice as strong as the love they had. My ex, her brother & a friend I once had — decided they wanted to do THEIR own thing cheating on their spouse – doing drugs beating on their child (yes he lost any kind of custody) and now their goal is to bad mouth those who wish to live by Bible principles. Yes those who wish to worship their Creator >> JEHOVAH!! No Danny I’m NOT brain washed as some would like to say(even you) but I chose to serve Jehovah as best as I humanly can!!!!!  Danny you need to chill your hatred, get your thinking process adjusted, try using the name JEHOVAH in prayer & come back to Him as did King Manasseh –read
2 Chronicles 33:10-13.  Or you can continue on as did King Saul @ 1 Sameul 15:35. The choice is yours.

Actually, Blue, when disfellowshiped people like Danny start “beating their fellow slaves” the way he is doing, they don’t usually come back. There is the disfellowshiping by elders and there is the disfellowshiping by the angels. And when a man gets disfellowshipped by the angels, that it for him! He’s on his way to Gehenna

Jehovah’s Witnesses American based religious sect.
    Are they really that extreme?
Let’s see…. They publish that the government is run by Satan the Devil
They publish that ALL religions except there own are corrupt, a lurking place of demons, and a tool for the Devil.

They sacrifice their own adherents by denying them acceptable-life saving blood transfusions They harbor child molesters in the their congregations and punish those who expose them to the authorities.

They separate their members from families and friends, normally good people, saying they are bad association.

It does not matter to me about any negative press about J.W.’s.  Even it is true.  2,500 years ago, if I was an Israelite (a Jew), there would have been negative press about our leaders and organization.  King Saul practiced spiritism, King David committed adultery and ordered people killed, King Solomon married countless wives and turned towards apostasy, King Manasseh practiced child sacrifice, Jonah proclaimed a message of doom to Nineveh and yet  the outcome of his message changed.  And yet Jehovah God continued to use this nation until the Messiah, Christ Jesus arrived.  Just as Jehovah is using Jehovah’s Witnesses to proclaim the good news before Armageddon. (Matthew 24:14)  Jehovah God has been so good to me that I will never forsake him or his people to the best of my ability.
