South Korea’s K-Pop Beyond Gangnam Style

Between Gangnam Style closing in on a billion You Tube views, not to mention all the spoofs, I think we all know what the tune sounds like at this point.

No doubt, it’s been enormous, and consequential.

The money that it’s spawned for the artist, a jovial Korean named PSY, and the shift in perception of Korea from industrial power-house to a place with some intriguing soft-power and bubble gum pop, has made PSY and Gangnam Style the story of the year, according to the Seoul Foreign Correspondents Club.

Flowsion Shekar follows K-pop trends and gossip on his arts and culture blog Koreaboo.

He says K-pop is a huge export for Korea. “The government has been supporting it. They’ve been trying to make it go bigger than it already is.”
