Lance Armstrong’s stupendous fall from grace is the topic of this slideshow.

See Lance with his head in his hands — literally.

See Lance take one last injection of drugs: truth serum.

And see a little boy being treated for cancer through the Livestrong Foundation wonder if he now has to apologize for taking drugs.

You know, I can’t find the story that aired on KPCC at 2:40-ish Pacific Time (heard it on the way to work).  But it aired a clip of Armstrong saying that the way he saw it then, everyone else was doping, so him also doping meant leveling the playing field.  I can sort of see that point—-but what seems more important is that he did found these charities and give all this money to help people who needed it.  So he doped before, and now he’s not gonna do it—and isn’t he doing a triathalon soon or something?  So maybe his intention is to start over and do a no-doping competitive thing. Which is cool. So what more can one ask?  He came clean in front of the world.  Now he’s going to continue forward with his same efforts, but with honesty. Punishing him for honesty is just sad.   Of all the frauds in the world running around out there, this is one guy I just can’t fault too much, because he has also done a lot of good.

He financially and emotionally destroyed others along the way. He knew that what he was doing were criminal acts. He gave only a pittance of what he actually earned. He bold-faced lied to everyone, even his own children. Nope, no more competition, no more big bucks for Lance, is my vote.

Why do Americans assume that athletes are paragons of virtue?
Why do we assume they are more honest that politicians, lawyers, bankers, salespeople, plumbers etc?
