David Bowie has musically been out of the public eye for 10 years.

And so it came as a total surprise when David Bowie released a new single and video Tuesday.

The song is called “Where Are We Now?

John Wilson of the BBC arts program Front Row says, “Some Bowie fans some can barely contain their excitement. I’ve seen on Twitter this morning several people talking about being in tears listening to this song. So I mean, okay, it’s a pop release but he’s an artist, he’s a proper artist. He doesn’t release records because it’s time for another record. He releases records when there is something for him to say.”

I find the video very provocative. Bowie’s preoccupation with mortality is jarring. It’s as if he wants to know if everyone else sees him the way he sees himself, and that he desperately wants us to. I sense a bit of a need to be honest, in some weird way. Like he wants to be “understood” before he dies. Does he portend his own untimely death?  Anyway, I look forward to the album.

God bless the boomers. It will be about them to their very end.
