Jazz Guitarist Yuto Kanazawa Writes ‘The Ocean’ in Aftermath of Fukushima Disaster

Yuto Kanazawa wanted to play pop and jazz standards when he first set out to become a professional musician.

He enrolled at the Berklee College of Music in Boston, and soon he was writing his own compositions.

Yuto Kanazawa performs "The Ocean."

Yuto Kanazawa performs “The Ocean.”

Kanazawa was far from his home city of Fukushima, Japan in March 2011 when the earthquake and tsunami devastated the northeast coast of Japan.

And the direction of his compositions changed.

Kanazawa came to The World studios recently and played one of those tunes, called “The Ocean.”

Watch the video above of his performance and interview with The World’s Marco Werman.

I am bemused.  I came to this page expecting “exclusive video of Yuto Kanazawa performing ‘The Ocean’” and instead am treated to a video version of the radio story.  They obviously performed the whole piece; why didn’t you do justice to the music and provide a complete version?

Original version of “The Ocean” can be found at http://vimeo.com/channels/yutokanazawaalbum

The audio on that link is still rough mixed, but it will be replaced as mastered track when it’s ready. Thanks!

to keep up with the latest information on Japan’s crisis, including the stories of sick children in Fukushima due to radiation exposure.

Japan’s crisis is such an important story, and yet it’s being virtually ignored by the mainstream media.

Hi, thank you for the link.

Some of my friends in Fukushima told me that it’s like human experiment for radioactivity. Even if they live in safe area, I can see how they got stressed about it.

It was quite unfortunate to see only one TV program actually reported about anti-nuclear demo by thousands of protesters in Tokyo last July. Though, I had never seen such massive activity in Japan, and hope it leads more action that actually makes the difference in the near future.

I will keep my eyes on the site.

      Thanks,

      Yuto
