Soul Source: Jackson Five Remixes, Vol. 2

My parents weren’t eager to turn me on to pop music. Classical…and if the mood suited them…jazz was where they directed my ears. I found pop music eventually, like kids always manage to find the candy aisle in the grocery store.

My parents did finally give me a pop album when I was ten: it was a SHARED present for my sister and me.

It was “ABC” by the Jackson Five. I’ll bet my parents thought that the title meant it was somewhat educational. And it was.

An education in soul and — when you hear Michael singing — a nod to the notion that you can start making music as early as you want:

Everyone has their quintessential Michael Jackson music. The album “ABC” remains the one for me. Apparently it remains the one for a lot of Japanese fans of Michael Jackson as well.

Including a collective of DJ’s who remixed his music. The Japanese have long been keen curators of all Michael Jackson material.

Broderick Morris is a producer who arranged several visits for Michael Jackson to Japan.

“No one does it like the Japanese fans, who wait for Michael when he arrives from the airport to the streets of Shibulia to Disneyland Tokyo, it’s just crazy and I’ve watched Michael, I’ve watched tears come out of his eyes from the love the Japanese fans give him here.”

So we leave you on this Friday with a Japanese take on Michael Jackson. It’s from a brilliant 2001 collection of all-Japanese remixes of Michael and the Jackson Five.

Here’s that unforgettable opening track on ABC…The Love You Save…remixed here by Sunaga’t Experience with a decidedly Brazilian flair.

Today’s Geo Quiz takes us north to the 68th parallel. That puts us just inside the Arctic Circle, a region now enjoying 24 hours of daylight.

We’re looking for a rocky archipelago off Norway’s northwest coast. Millions of sea birds, including sea eagles and colorful puffins migrate each year to this region.

They feast on the fish that swim in the waters of the Vestfjord. It separates the archipelago we’re looking for from Norway’s mainland. And who knows WHAT ELSE lurks in the cold deep waters of the Vestfjord?

Puffin

Listen to the Geo Quiz hint

Can you identify this sound and name this Norwegian archipelago?

Geo Answer

Time to clear up our Geo Quiz mystery and locate this Norwegian archipelago. The World’s David Leveille has the answer:

Loften

The rocky islands of the archipelago in the Norwegian Sea called Lofoten rise dramatically up out of the Norwegian Sea.

On them are scattered small fishing villages with names like Henningsvaer, a village of 450 residents, mostly fishermen, whalers and one marine biologist named Heike Vester.

Her research focuses on bio-acoustic communication among marine mammals….seals, killer whales, and other fish found in the waters of the Vestfjord. On most days, Vester packs her lunch, a G-PS, and a hydrophone (that’s an underwater microphone) and heads for open water on her zodiac:

“…and you scan the horizon for anything that doesn’t look like water. Sometimes when you see a white splash and you see it again and again and maybe you see a black fin that’s when you have found a whale… Once we’re with the whales, we ho[pe that they're not disturbed by us so that we can approach them slowly, stop the boat and record."

Vester recorded this clicking sound. She says it's sperm whales in search of a meal --- their clicks travel thru the water, bounce off clusters of squid or fish, and echo back the good news. It's called echo-location.

I recorded it in 2006 off the coast because the sperm whales don't come into the Vestfjord they stay further out where it is quite they deep 2,000 meters where they find squid

Now these are year-round residents in the Vestfjord . Vester says this pod of pilot whales was idling near the surface one summer day, buzzing and clicking.

They came up to the boat and they were just laying and calling and they called for quite some time you can hear they get little active, and then when it's quiet they disappeared almost like saying goodbye to us.
Pilot whales resting in Vestfjord | Photo: Heike Vester

Another marine mammal that likes to linger in these waters is the Orca. Vester says Killer whales have learned to loiter around Norwegian fishing boats as the catch is hauled in:

The killer whales search herring close to the boats or they wait till the fishing boats have hauled in the herring so they go and wait for the spill or steal herring directly from the net. I have reports from fisherman they say that sometimes in the morning when I woke up the horizon is black with killer whales just waiting for them to pull in the herring.

Who says there's no free lunch? OK I saved the best for last. Vester made this recording out floating around the Vestfjord. There's no boat engine rumbling to interfere. The Orcas speaks for themselves:

It was one of the rare situations where I actually encountered whales by myself, there were no other boats around and they were carousel feeding, It was 12-18 animals herding the herring which are usually deep it the water columns, so they have to dive down and pick it up and chase it to the surface and the buzzes are used to scare the herring under the surface they hit it with their tails that's the tail slaps bang! and then the herring is dead and or stunned and they eat it one by one, they don't just feed or feast on the herring no they're very delicate, they just eat one herring and then another one.

Carousel feeding Killer whales | Photo: Heike Vester

Heike Vester has compiled 5 years worth of her recordings on new CD called Marine Mammals and Fish of Lofoten. There are no vocals. No guitar solos. Just whales, dolphins, seals, sharks and mackerel. Vester’s hope is that her audio research will promote protection of Lofoton’s unique marine ecosystem. It’s a fascinating listen. But the CD’s long and usual tracks shouldn’t be gulped down, better to savor them one by one the way Orcas eat herring.

LONGINES FERNANDES: Michael Jackson was a great hit. In Bollywood movies, you see lots of people who copy him and try to act the way he acts, so people are crazy about him.

WERMAN: I’m joined now by Longines Fernandes, who’s in Mumbai. Longines is an award-winning Bollywood choreographer. He created the dance sequences for the movie “Slumdog Millionaire,” for which he won the prestigious Astaire award for Best Film Choreographer. Longines, got to thank you for breaking away from your dance rehearsal to join us for a few minutes on the streets of Mumbai. When we watch Bollywood dancing, for example, Jai Ho, that exciting closing dance number in Slumdog Millionaire, how much are we seeing Michael Jackson influence at play?

FERNANDES: You will see an influence of Michael Jackson 110 percent in me, because as a child I’ve grown up watching all his videos, hearing all his songs, and his dancing style -- there’s nobody who can match that. As a child, at first when I saw him walk backwards, I never knew what it meant. Years later, I got to know it was the moonwalk. And then I always was thrilled when I saw “Thriller”. And when you see Jai Ho, you see the glimpse of the Thriller. So it’s an honor trying to emulate him in my own small manner. That’s what I feel, and I think everyone all over the world feel the same, because that man has not only created history, but at one point in time, he was even much more famous than the President of the USA.

WERMAN: Well, get into the specifics of what elements of his dancing you’ve kind of caught on to and you fold into your own choreography. I mean, like the pop-and-lock. You mentioned the moonwalk. What about the hands, the gestures, the feet?

FERNANDES: All in all, it wasn’t only about his dancing style. It was more about his walking style, the kinds of move that he made, his attire. It was just way beyond compare. And whenever he used to do anything, whether it was “The Way You Make Me Feel” or “Smooth Criminal” – his hand moves, to see the hands hitting on the side, the leg lifting up, shaking the legs, the golden socks, the silver sequin socks – all that became a culture. Through everything that he did, people always wanted to read, “What is he going to come up with next?” If you remember “Remember The Time”, that is something that you never want to forget all your life.

WERMAN: Do you think that in Bollywood dance and choreography, there was a kind of “before Michael Jackson” and “after Michael Jackson” dividing line?

FERNANDES: Choreography in Bollywood went way above the mark only by watching him. Everybody wanted to get a chance to do something what he did. Even me today, I am going to remember his kind of choreography for the rest of my life, because I’m going to give him and keep his dancing style alive, at least from here in Bollywood.

WERMAN: Longines Fernandes, choreographer for the movie Slumdog Millionaire, joining us from the streets of Mumbai, thanks so much.

FERNANDES: Thank you very, very much, sir. It’s an honor speaking to you at all point of time. God bless his soul and may his soul rest in peace.</transcript><dsq_thread_id>251248385</dsq_thread_id></custom_fields>
