Vox Rock_Pepsi China Battle of the Bands

Pepsi Co. and Shanghai TV have invited “underground” bands from across China to compete in an American Idol-style TV show. It’s China’s “Battle of the Bands,” and the finals are fast approaching. The winners will get some cash, some new equipment, and a recording contract with Pepsi Co.’s music label. The World’s Mary Kay Magistad checks out some of the finalists in Shanghai. Download MP3

The name pretty much says it all. The band “Delhi 2 Dublin” plays a free-flowing mix of Indian bhangra and Irish jigs. It’s a blend of Irish fiddles and Indian tablas, not to mention sitars and electric guitars. Throughout the summer this Vancouver-based band has been playing concerts from Canada to California. Reporter Lonny Shavelson recently caught up with them at a gig in San Francisco.

For today’s Global Hit, a head-of-state turned lyricist. Israeli President Shimon Peres celebrated his 86th birthday last week. He’s been in Israeli politics for more than half a century. Turns out, that whole time, he’s also been writing poems, inspired by historical events he’s witnessed first hand.
