A long forgotten and controversial part of Britain’s past is being unearthed by an American historian living in London. Tom Sebrell has uncovered evidence of strong support for the southern Confederate states in the Civil War in America. Britain was officially neutral during the war. But Sebrell is now leading walking tours of London that reveal untold stories of Britain’s role. Laura Lynch decided to take the tour for herself. The Baryshnikov Arts Center in New York is hosting a show titled: Spectral Scriabin. Alexander Scriabin was a composer from Russia, part of the so-called Russian Symbolist movement. The show includes Georgian pianist Eteri Andjaparidze and American lighting designer Jennifer Tipton who create a music-theater work in which the Russian composers music merges with an intricate color and light interplay. A French street artist known as JR has been awarded the 2011 TED Prize. The $100,000 prize rewards an artist known for plastering huge black-and-white photos of ordinary people in some of the world’s worst slums. JR has done his photo work in Brazilian favelas, Kenyan shantytowns and most recently Chinese neighborhoods slated for demolition. As the rescue attempt gathered pace in the Atacama Desert above, hundreds of relatives and dozens of international media organisations set up camp there. MIT’s Media Lab is working on a project that could help people in poor countries get their eyes tested using a cellphone.
