Dame Edna to Retire

The World

She is bawdy, gaudy and boisterous.

She is Dame Edna Everage. A lilac-wig wearing character created by Australian comedian Barry Humphries.

Humphries announced Monday that he is retiring the character. He created Dame Edna more than 50 years ago as a drab, but proper suburban Australian housewife.

Over the years, Dame Edna evolved into a larger-than-life celebrity; brash and outspoken, sporting cat-eye glasses and outlandish outfits.

She went on to host her own talk shows in the 80s and 90s where she interviewed celebrities such as Alec Baldwin, Mel Gibson, Zsa Zsa Gabor and Charlton Heston.
