Tijuana has been plagued by drug-related murders and kidnappings but then things were calming down in the Mexican city. Then the violence started up again and now some in Tijuana want to show the rest of the world their city is more than a murder capital. They hope to demonstrate that on Thursday with a mass street performance on both sides of the border. It’s called Pa Bailar, or To Dance, Tijuana. Ruxandra Guidi of KPBS has the story. Mexico is celebrating the bicentennial of its independence with parties across the country. However, security is high in many regions, with some towns and cities canceling or cutting back festivities amid fears of drug cartel violence. Mexican troops say they have discovered 72 bodies at a ranch in the north of the country. The bodies were found after a shoot-out with suspected drug cartel gunmen in which three gunmen and one marine were killed, the military said. More than 28,000 people have died in drug-related violence in Mexico over the last four years. The BBC’s Julian Miglierini is following the story from Mexico City. In 1985 the Mexican military opened a small museum chronicling the history and use of drugs in the country. It started with just a few displays. US officials have announced the arrest, on American soil, of more than 300 members of a major Mexican drug cartel. The Mexican newspaper El Universal has been running a series this week focusing on drug-trafficking north of the border, in the United States. The newspaper reports that the drug cartels are increasing their operations inside the US. One of the reporters on the series is Evangelina Hernandez.
