The World’s Matthew Bell reports on today’s cancelled “Day of Rage” in the West Bank. The Palestinian Authority had originally called for protests against the treatment of Palestinians at the hands of Israel and the West. But the protests were called off over concern that popular anger could instead turn against Palestinian officials themselves. The Palestinian Authority has accused al-Jazeera TV of distortion, after it leaked documents purporting to show offers of major concessions to Israel. The documents suggest the Palestinians agreed to Israel annexing all but one settlement in occupied East Jerusalem – an offer Israel apparently rejected. Israel and the Palestinian Authority are talking to each other again, this time through American mediation. And one of the most contentious issues is still the settlements. When Jewish settlers move into Palestinian parts of the West Bank and East Jerusalem, they are often motivated by religious ideology.
