Rediscovered Spanish Civil War negatives

Lost since 1939, the Mexican Suitcase contains nearly 4,500 negatives documenting the Spanish Civil War by Robert Capa, Chim (David Seymour), and Gerda Taro. These films had travelled from Paris via the south of France to Mexico City, where, almost seventy years later, they were recovered. They now on view in an exhibition at the International Center of Photography. Adeline Sire has the story. Download MP3

Former Presidents George W. Bush and Bill Clinton are visiting the rubble-filled Haitian capital Port-au-Prince today as part of their effort to raise money for, and stimulate investment in, the country’s rebuilding. The January quake left an estimated 230,000 dead, and another 1.3 million homeless. Photojournalist Bear Guerra recently went to Haiti to document the efforts of Haitians to put their lives back together, and try to get back some sense of normalcy. The life and death of Sitara Achakzai

We hear about the remarkable life of Sitara Achakzai. She was born and raised in Kandahar, Afghanistan, the city known as the birthplace of the Taliban. Sitara served as a local legislator in Kandahar, where she was a vocal proponent of women’s rights. In April 2009, she was shot and killed outsider her home. Turn back the clock to 1986. The Cold War is in full swing. The Soviet Union is seven years into its occupation of Afghanistan. And Afghan resistance fighters — the mujahedeen — are making life very difficult for Soviet troops. Afghanistan was as dangerous in 1986 as it is today. That didn’t stop the humanitarian group “Doctors without Borders” from going in. A new book portrays the journey one photographer took with the group into war-torn Afghanistan.
