Homai Vyarawalla, India’s first woman press photographer, passed away last month at the age of 98.

A French street artist known as JR has been awarded the 2011 TED Prize. The $100,000 prize rewards an artist known for plastering huge black-and-white photos of ordinary people in some of the world’s worst slums. JR has done his photo work in Brazilian favelas, Kenyan shantytowns and most recently Chinese neighborhoods slated for demolition. Download MP3Video: See JR at work
BBC slideshow: African elders
The BBC recently asked online visitors from Africa to send in pictures of elders. The result is a stunning slideshow full of pictures like this one. Here, an Ethiopian man meditates by the rock-hewn churches in Lalibela. The photo was sent in to the BBC by Eugene Prahin. Follow the link below to see the entire slideshow.

The easiest way to get your photos to us is to send them in via email: theworld@pri.org. You can send the photos as attachments, or pass along a link to where those photos live online. Our Facebook fan page is also an excellent place to leave a photo. If Flickr’s your preferred photo sharing option, just tag your photos with the following: worldsummerphotos. We’ll do the searching and get them.
Your summer photos
Today is the “unofficial” end of summer in the U.S. and we want you to share your summer photos. We’ve already collected over 200 entries, but we would love to share your photos too!
