Matthew Exell

Producer

Purely due to the five-hour time difference, Matthew is at his desk well before his colleagues in Boston roll out of bed in the morning. As a producer in The World’s London bureau he puts this time advantage to good use, seeking out the stories of the day and putting together a kind of early draft of how the program may turn out. It rarely does, of course, but it’s a good start to the team’s discussions.

Much of the rest of his time is spent setting up interviews with key figures in the news, working closely with The World’s foreign correspondents, mixing news packages, seeking out scratchy old archive material, and so on.

Matthew’s childhood dreams were two-fold: to make it in broadcasting, and to form a band as era-defining as The Beatles. Although he’s manifestly missed the boat on at least one of these, he stubbornly continues to write and record his songs at home, under the nom de plume of Jupiter Soulfood.
